Chief Operating Officer

Paul Hallen serves as Chief Operating Officer of Nanoscope Therapeutics. He brings 37 years of experience in ophthalmic medical technology and biopharmaceuticals, with leadership roles spanning R&D, global marketing, manufacturing, quality, and commercial operations.

As COO of Nanoscope, Paul leads the company’s global operations, including commercial readiness, supply chain, and cross-functional execution,  supporting the company’s advancement of novel therapies for patients worldwide with retinal degenerative diseases.

Prior to joining Nanoscope, Paul held multiple executive positions at Alcon, most recently as Vice President of Global Retina & Glaucoma Franchises. In this role, he led the development and commercialization of innovative surgical and therapeutic solutions, including the UNITY surgical platform, recognized as the 2026 BIG Innovation Awards “Overall Winner,” and contributed to advancing the global standard of care in retinal surgery.

Earlier in his career, Paul held roles at Unisys in both Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Engineering. He also co-founded a startup, Retina Labs, based at Johns Hopkins, alongside Gene De Juan, where they patented beta radiation therapy for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This work ultimately led to the formation of NeoVista.

Throughout his tenure at Alcon, Paul held senior leadership roles across retina pharmaceuticals, surgical sales, R&D, and external acquisitions. He is also a named inventor on multiple patents and was recognized as an Alcon Distinguished Fellow for Innovation.

Paul has a BS in Industrial Engineering from California State University, San Luis Obispo and a Masters in Systems Management from the University of Southern California in addition to Professional Executive Courses at Texas Christian University and Stanford University
